BESS: solar energy and batteries that replace the UPS
BESS stands for Battery Energy Storage System. ENC@SOLAR's BESS combines inverters and batteries in one system that stores solar energy, powers your loads at night and backs up critical equipment during outages.
How it works
By day
Solar panels power your loads directly. The surplus charges the batteries.
At night
The batteries take over, so you buy less energy from the grid.
During an outage
The system keeps critical loads running while the grid is down.
Power tells you how many. Energy tells you how long.
- Inverters (kW)
- How many devices can run at the same time.
- Batteries (kWh)
- How many hours they keep running without sun.
Example: a system with 16 kW of inverters and a 15 kWh battery can start many devices together, but the 15 kWh sets how long they run. Two air conditioners and thirty LED fixtures overnight use about 13 kWh, so that battery covers them. The estimator below uses these values by default.
BESS compared with a conventional UPS
| Feature | Conventional UPS | BESS |
|---|---|---|
| Backup time | Typically minutes | Hours, sized to your load |
| Works with solar | No | Yes, it stores solar energy |
| Daily use | Standby for emergencies only | Works every day and backs up in an outage |
| Effect on your bill | A cost with no return | Reduces the energy you buy |
